EATING SHOULD BE EASY BUT IT ISN’T FOR EVERYONE

Eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE) is estimated to affect about 1 in 2400 adults and 1 in 3000 children in Europe and North America. The prevalence in Australia is thought to be similar.2

The ‘Eating should be a pleasure’ campaign is an initiative created by Dr Falk Pharma Italy, and used globally, to increase awareness of EoE.

Eating is not only a biological necessity but also a source of pleasure and a cornerstone of social interaction. However, for most people with EoE, eating is anything but pleasurable.

Using a touch of humour, this public awareness campaign highlights the negative impact of EoE symptoms on the enjoyment of eating and social interactions.

“By using the element of surprise as a tool to tell the story of the various adaptive behaviours, we believe we can reach a lot more people, including the young, who might recognise these behaviours in themselves. Many people are often undiagnosed or unaware of the condition, which compromises their quality of life because eating becomes difficult and pleasureless, frequently leading to avoidance of social situations”.

While the scenes may seem exaggerated, some people with EoE do use the following strategies portrayed in the video to get through a meal:

Removing ingredients

Adding an excessive amount of sauce

Blending their food

People with EoE also:

Cut up their food into smaller pieces

Drink excessive amounts of water to help push food down

Avoid eating with family and friends
